Youtube Videos as a Message Board Post

youtubeOne of the most fun and interesting features TBK has to offer is the ability to embed youtube videos into message board posts.  This feature, however, isn't used nearly as much as people would like, because it isn't as simple as just cutting and pasting an internet URL.  It is fairly easy to do, though, after attempting it a couple of times.

The following is a set of simple instructions for embedding youtube videos into message board posts:

To start out with, it is necessary to go to www.youtube.com, and find a video that  has something to do with whatever subject the thread is talking to.  Once you've found an interesting video you'd like to share, you should copy the hyperlink at the top of the page.  To do that highlight the entire link, then right click somewhere on the text and find "copy".  For this example, we will be using the video found at the following link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnd9jx4NjLk

Once you've copied that link, go ahead and paste it in the reply box of whatever thread you'd like to post the youtube video in.  To paste, right click somewhere in the box, and select paste.

Above TBK's reply box, there are three rows of dark grey boxes.  In the second row about halfway across, there's a box that says "Youtube".  Click that box.  Once you've clicked that box, the following code should appear:

At this point, you're almost done.  In the middle of the brackets, type in only the part of the link that follows the equals sign (cnd9jx4NjLk).  You can also highlight that part, copy it, and paste it like was described earlier in these instructions.

The important part is that you only include the part of the link that follows the equals sign.  It is usually a series of about 10 random letters and numbers, and that series represents the video you are interested in sharing.  Once you finished doing this, your code should look like this:

That code right there will embed your youtube video.  At this point you can erase the entire hyperlink, and the youtube video should appear like this:

One other thing to keep in mind is sometimes if you use the links on the right side of youtube, sometimes your hyperlink will get a little more complicated.  For example, if you are watching another Daniel Orton video, but you click on one of the "similar videos" on the right side, your link for the same video posted above will look as follows:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnd9jx4NjLk&feature=related

In this case, you leave off everything the "&" symble and everything that follows it.  The code needed is always directly after the first equals sign but before the "&" if one exists.

There is actually an embedded feature on youtube so that you don't have to take out a chunk of the http. You simply copy and paste the embedded video ID and there you go. It's over on the right hand side below the info box for that video.

Mark, the embed feature only works well with websites that use HTML code. This website doesn't do that.

I created a thread in the support forum with an example of what using the embed feature would do on this website.
